Who we are and how it works

The Blue Lion Session was started in August 2009 by Pat Longley and Helen Keen. We wanted to create a friendly atmosphere where people could come and jam to both types of music: bluegrass and old-time. We meet every 1st Weds of each month. We used to meet at the Blue Lion, and have now moved to the Lamb, 54 Holloway Rd, near Highbury & Islington tube. The music starts at 8. We usually take it in turns round the group to choose a tune or song to play – though no pressure if you don’t want to have to kick it off yourself. We’re happy if you want to come and sing songs, practice your breaks, or just strum along with chords. As they say in the USA, it’s all good.

  2. Dennis Baugh Says:

Please let me know the price is it to get in including concessions.

  3. What happened to the other session on the weeks in between ?

  4. This jam sounds akin to ours in Madrid.
The Americana Music Jam Madrid is every Sunday. We display the song chords for all to see and we’re always open to newcomers pros and beginners alike. So anyone who is ever in Spain’s capital should look us up and feel welcome to sit in or just pop round for a listen or a singalong.

  5. Just in case any of this old stuff is confusing, the Blue Lion Session is now at a pub called the Lamb on Holloway Road, and it is once on month on the first Weds each month.

Hello old time music fans! I am moving from Boston to London with a 2 year work assignment, arriving in 2 weeks. I play clawhammer banjo and old-timey mandolin and would really love to find a friendly jam in London. Is this group still active and are you still playing first Wednesdays at the Lamb?

      • Hello Paul! Yes indeed. We are just the people you are looking for 🙂
We play from 8pm at the Lamb, 54 Holloway Rd (near Highbury & Islington tube station) every 1st Weds of the month.

There are also a range of other sessions you might want to try depending on where in London you will live. For example: Mondays – The Elderfield in Homerton (E London), and a monthly Tuesday jam in Richmond (W London). Also on Sundays there are often a few pubs where people play, including a monthly jam at the Harrison (Kings Cross) and a weekly jam at the Shakespeare’s Head (Angel).

Hope to see you in Feb or March!

      • Paul Greenspan Says:

Wonderful! Looking forward to meeting you and the other folks and playing some tunes real soon! I will miss the February jam due to previous engagement, but will try for March!

        best, Paul

  6. I’m here just this week 23/09/2015 wed, thur, fri. In Islington. Are there any jams available? \must borrow a guitar or mandolin : (

I’m from Georgia US and bluegrassed for many decaces. Run the jam in listed below in the link. Would like to test the waters here.

    • Hi Keith, I’m sorry i don’t know of any jams happening from weds-fri this week. There are some nice pubs that you might want to go to just to hear some local music instead, such as the Betsey Trotwood in Farringdon, or the Harrison in Kings Cross. Hope you can make it to our jam (1st Weds each month) another time, Helen.
